Former England captain Michael Vaughan has suggested that Virat Kohli should be made India’s captain for the upcoming England series, with Shubman Gill as his deputy.

Vaughan’s recommendation follows India captain Rohit Sharma’s announcement of his retirement from Test cricket. Since then, there has been speculation that the BCCI is looking for a new leader, with Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah being the main contenders.

Reports also suggest that Kohli has shown interest in stepping down from the longest format of the game. Vaughan posted on X, "If I was India, I would give the captaincy to Virat for the Test series in England, and Shubman Gill can be his vice-captain for the tour."

Virat Kohli's Leadership and Batting Record


Virat Kohli has a strong history as India's Test captain. From 2014 to 2022, he led the team in 68 matches, winning 40 of them. This gives him a win rate of 58.82%, the highest among Indian Test captains .

As a batsman, Kohli has played 123 Test matches, scoring 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85. He has 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries to his name . His highest score in a Test match is 254*.

Kohli's last Test series was the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, where he faced criticism for his performance, especially his struggles with deliveries outside the off-stump. However, his recent form in the IPL suggests he is in good shape for the upcoming World Test Championship cycle starting next month.
